  1. As an adult, Khaled had an interesting life. In 1988, when he decided to benefit him and his family, he enrolled in biology at Santa Clara University and medicine at University of California, San Diego. He joined the Kaiser Permanente health maintenance organization and moved to California to start a family. As he was studying medicine, he would write short stories. But when the Taliban took over Afghanistan, he felt he had to tell the story of the country before it was war-ridden. So for a year and a half he woke up and worked on his novel before working on patients. In 2003, his novel was completed, and published by Riverhead Books, was The Kite Runner. His book did not have much publicity at first, but it spent more than two years on the New York Times bestseller list, and has sold 12 million copies. But, on Khaled's first return to Afghanistan in 27 years, he was devastated to learn the fate and condition of his home country.

  4. I'm giving background on Afghanistan as a time line-ish thing because it is less confusing.

1960's: Many travelers were using infrastructure built up during the cold war by both the US and the USSR during the cold war. (Amir is born in 1963)

1970's: In 1973 a bloodless coup is launched against the monarchy by the king's brother in law Daoud Khan. In 1978 a revolution by the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan is started. The new government takes on a socialist agenda and reforms government and gives when much more freedom and equality. however they are exceedingly brutal to the traditional elite and religious establishment. In 1979 the us started funding the Mujahideen in order to weaken the current socialist government.

    (will post more later)
